THE FASHION WORLD OF JEAN PAUL GAULTIER : FROM THE SIDEWALK TO THE CATWALK

Now on at the Barbican is the first ever major exhibition dedicated to the French couturier Jean Paul Gaultier. Known for his outlandish designs Jean Paul Gaultier has redefined the rules of fashion throughout his career. With his constant fascination of the worlds cultures and countercultures, Gaultier manipulates, transforms and reinterprets all of these ideas to create a fashion strictly of his own. Constantly questioning the idea of gender codes and fashion codes has lead to much criticism throughout his 40 year career... but most importantly an overwhelming approval and respect from the fashion and outside world.

The Barbican holds more than 165 couture and ready-to-wear garments including the iconic costumes of Madonna's Blond Ambition World Tour in 1990. Also shown are renowned artists and photographers who Jean Paul Gaultier has collaborated with over the years. Sketches, designs, catwalk presentations, music videos, films and more can be seen from now until August 25. Whether you are an admirer of his work or not, this exhibition is not to be missed, it will leave you with a profound respect of Gaultier and his historic designs.
What a legend.
